United Nations/Austria/European Space Agency Series of Symposiums

Since 1994 the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, in the framework of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications, the Government of Austria and the European Space Agency (ESA) in cooperation with other co-sponsors have been organizing a series of space-related Symposiums in Graz, Austria.

The Symposiums address a wide range of space-related issues, such as the contributions of space technology and its applications to enhancing social, economic and environmental security, the potential of space for improving life, the cooperation of space industry in industrialised and developing countries, economic benefits of using space technology as well as the enhancement of the participation of youth in space activities.

Following the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2002, the Graz Symposiums in 2002-2008 contributed to the promotion of space-related activities in support of the WSSD Plan of Implementation.

Since 2009, the Graz Symposiums have become a vehicle to implement the United Nations Basic Space Technology Initiative (UNBSTI), focusing in particular on the role of small satellite programmes for sustainable development.
