United Nations / Sudan Workshop on the Use of Space Technology for Natural Resources Management, Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Management 5 - 9 April 2004

Khartoum, Sudan
The ultimate goal of this workshop is to facilitate the implementation of space technologies into operational programmes in Africa and Western Asia, focusing on increasing the awareness of managers and decision-makers of the potential benefits of using space-based technologies in programmes dedicated to Natural Resource Management, Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Management, and developing a regional plan-of-action that will lead to pilot projects tailored for the specific needs of the region.

United Nations/Islamic Republic of Iran Workshop on the Use of Space Technology for Environmental Security, Disaster Rehabilitation and Sustainable Development 8 - 12 May 2004

Tehran, Iran
The objectives of this Regional Workshop are: increase the awareness of managers and decision makers dealing with environmental issues and disaster problems of the potential benefits of using space technologies within the area of environmental security, disaster rehabilitation, post-conflict reconstruction, refugee support and sustainable development; strengthen existing Regional Networks; and develop a Plan-of-Action with recommendations that will guide the incorporation of the use of space technologies in the above areas.

United Nations/Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission Seminar on Space Technology Applications: Monitoring and Protection of the Natural Environment 30 August - 4 September 2004

Islamabad, Pakistan
To evaluate a local impact of the series of the UN/Sweden training Courses, to find the major reasons for a high/low rate of success in implementing the knowledge received in Sweden, and to identify the nature and scope of possible support to ensure that on-going efforts have established firm roots within the educational communities in developing countries of the Region. The seminar will also allow reviewing the present course content/format with a view of implementing changes if deemed necessary. It will also allow to upgrade the former participants' knowledge of current remote sensing techniques and teaching methods.

UN/Austria/ESA Symposium on Space Applications for Sustainable Development to Support the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development 13 - 16 September 2004

To identify ways and means to use space technology application to support the management of water resources. While the issues covered, technical presentations and discussions will be at the international level, particular attention will be paid to activities currently being carried out under Module 2 of the CEOS World Summit on Sustainable Development Follow up Programme. This Symposium in linked to the TIGER project, which is ESA�s contribution to the 2004 activities of Module 2.

To review a number of capacity building initiatives in the area of disaster management and education that are being carried out by various entities through international cooperation and to look for ways to build synergies among them.

Fifth UN/IAA Workshop on Small Satellites 1 - 2 October 2004

Vancouver, Canada
The workshop will cover scientific, Earth observation, and telecommunication missions. Emphasis will be placed on international co-operation, education and training, and support to environment monitoring and security, including disaster mitigation.

United Nations/European Space Agency/Austria/Switzerland Workshop on Remote Sensing in the Service of Sustainable Development in Mountain Areas 15 � 19 November 2004

Kathmandu, Nepal
The primary objective of the workshop is to discuss how remote sensing, satellite communications and GNSS can be used in projects in sustainable development in mountainous areas, with the aim of developing priorities for building capacity in remote sensing for the benefit of mountainous regions.

United Nations International Workshop on the Use of Space Technology for Disaster Management 18 - 22 October 2004

This international workshop will wrap-up the previous 5 regional workshops held on space technology and disaster management focusing on a common vision and approach across all regions, setting guidelines for the development of an global disaster management system, building upon the recommendations of Action Team 7 and building upon other international initiatives such as GEO and GMES.

United Nations/Saudi Arabia Regional Workshop on the Use of Space Technology for Disaster Management for Western Asia 2-6 October 2004

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The objectives of this Regional Workshop, which is the fifth and last one of the space technology and disaster management workshops are: increase the awareness of managers and decision makers involved in disaster management of the potential benefits and the cost-effectiveness of using space technologies; determine the types of information and communications required to manage specific disasters and the extent to which these requirements could be met by space technologies; and develop a regional plan of action together with the definition of possible pilot projects that incorporate and test the use of space-technology tools in disaster management and that will help define the structure of a regional network to support the use of space technology in disaster management activities.

UN/USA International Meeting on the Use and Applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems 13-17 December 2004

Vienna, Austria
The main objectives of the meeting will be to review the follow-up projects resulting from the UN/USA International Workshop on GNSS, held in December 2003 and to determine the GNSS activities to be supported by OOSA with contributions of U.S. State Department for 2005; a first meeting of the International Committee on GNSS, the establishment of which was proposed by the Action Team on GNSS of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, might also be held as part of this International Meeting.

United Nations/Brazil Workshop on Space Law "Disseminating and developing international and national space law: the Latin America and Caribbean perspective" 22-25 November 2004

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The main objective of this workshop will be to build capacity in space law, particularly with reference to the United Nations Treaties and Principles on Outer Space.
